What industry is bigger than farming? Bigger than utilities? OUTDOOR RECREATION 🎉 🎉 🎉 Recently the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) released its updated national and state level data on the outdoor recreation economy, showcasing 2023 was a great year for outdoor activities. As a whole, the outdoor recreation economy grew three times faster than the U.S. economy, with biking, skiing, snowboarding, hunting, hiking and camping all showing strong gains. What does this mean for fishing and boating? OPPORTUNITY. The Outdoor Industry Association has released their 2024 Outdoor Participation Trends Report to provide insights and narratives around who’s doing what, when, and how outdoors. BREAKING NEWS! The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) just released new data on the economic impact of outdoor recreation and found that it is responsible for more than $1.2 trillion in economic output, 2.3% of U.S. GDP, and 5 million jobs. Outdoor recreation is one of the main ways Americans come to know their public lands and waters and develop a stewardship ethic. With outdoor participation growing, it is even more important that Congress prioritize sound policy that would improve access, create more trails, and protect the outdoors. Outdoor Alliance and its partners have been working for years to develop and pass a package of recreation policy to improve outdoor recreation on public lands and waters. Have you noticed that wildfires seem more intense in recent years? You aren’t imagining it—wildfire seasons have been getting worse. Fires are larger, more severe, more expensive, more destructive, and more disruptive to our lives. Fire also has a huge impact on outdoor recreation, damaging trails, climbing areas, and campgrounds. Fires—or even fire danger—have caused land managers to close public lands, sometimes indefinitely. Even when a landscape isn’t directly threatened by fire, smoke from wildfires has become a huge problem for air quality in the west, making outdoor recreation unsafe. Outdoor Alliance works closely with lawmakers and the administration on ways to help prevent severe wildfires. Last year, we shared a policy report on why wildfire has gotten so bad in the West, and some of the different approaches to fixing that. Outdoor recreationists have a role to play in understanding fire. No matter the political landscape, Outdoor Alliance has been successful at finding the line to build bipartisan consensus that has resulted in millions of acres of public land protections, funding for the outdoors, and better policy for the places you like to recreate. A new report released recently from the  U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows outdoor recreation in the U.S. generating $1.2 trillion in economic output (2.3% of GDP) and 5 million jobs. New economic data released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) shows that fishing and boating is the # 1 contributor to the outdoor recreation economy. “This BEA data proves what the fishing industry has always known – outdoor recreation is an economic force in the United States and is only getting bigger. ACTION ALERT // The Forest Service recently announced it will suspend non-fire seasonal hiring because of a budget shortfall, a decision that will affect 193 million acres of National Forest land. A number of factors has led to this year’s budget shortfall at the Forest Service. Over the last fifteen years, outdoor recreation visits have steadily increased, but real funding for outdoor recreation has decreased. Inflation has also strained agency budgets. Outdoor recreation, conservation, maintenance, and research are likely to take a big hit this summer, adding challenges to National Forests that are already facing increased stress from the effects of climate change and wildfire. Regardless of how we arrived here, the lack of seasonal workers will have a significant impact on outdoor recreation and on the long-term health of our forests. Outdoor enthusiasts have a key role to play in sharing their concerns with lawmakers.  We’ve made it easy to write a letter advocating for better funding for the Forest Service to ensure a seasonal workforce that fulfills outdoor recreation needs: https://lnkd.in/gRux3rh7

New Data Shows Outdoor Recreation is a $1.2 TRILLION Economic Engine, Supporting 5 Million American Jobs Outdoor Recreation Roundtable (@orroundtable) announced new economic data released today by the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) revealing that outdoor recreation continues to be a major driver of the U.S. economy, jobs, and local communities. According to the latest data from the BEA Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account, outdoor recreation generated $1.2 trillion in economic output (2.3% of GDP), comprises 3.1% of U.S. employees and accounted for 5 million jobs in 2023. This is the largest recorded measure since the BEA started calculating the size of the outdoor recreation economy in 2012. According to newly revised data in this year’s release from the BEA, the outdoor recreation economy has grown 36% in real terms since 2012. These new figures reveal that the outdoor recreation economy contributes more to the U.S. economy than farming, mining, and utilities. https://lnkd.in/eD8S3rac
